On Nokia 6230 and Palm T5 connectivity

Published by Mikael Hallendal on November 4, 2004 06:33 pm under Uncategorized

After a lot of messing around I finally got all the functionality working over bluetooth between my new Palm Tungsten T5 and my Nokia 6230 phone. Palm hasn’t released a “driver” for Nokia 6230 yet and it’s said not to work but finally I got it working.

First of all I had to install the 6310i phone link.

Creating the connections
Unfortunately there isn’t one driver that works for everything so I had to use a combination of 6210 driver and 6310i driver. Do it as follows:

  1. Go into the prefs application
  2. Tap on Connection
  3. Create a new connection
  4. Name it something like “6230 - GPRS”
  5. Set it to be a phone, via bluetooth, tap the device to select the bluetooth phone and then set Model to Nokia 6310i
  6. In order to connect to Telia Online (swedish GPRS service) I had to change the init string (accessed from Details…) to +CGDCONT=1,,”online.telia.se”.

That was the connection to be used as modem. Then I created a connection to be used as phone when reading/writing SMS and dialing phone numbers:

  1. Create a new connection as above and I named mine Nokia 6230.
  2. Set it to be a phone via bluetooth, chose the same remote bluetooth device as above but set the Model to be Nokia 6210.

In prefs->Phone chose the second connection you created, in my case Nokia 6230.

OK, at this point my phone applications works (SMS, Dialer and dialing from Contacts). Now it’s just the last part and that’s creating a Network for the GPRS link:

  1. Open Networks settings (Prefs->Network)
  2. Create a new connection.
  3. For connection chose the first connection you created, in my case 6230 - GPRS.
  4. Select the phonenumber to get the phone to connect GPRS, *99# (not sure if this is always the same).

Then you can try to connect by tapping the Connect button. At least this worked for me :)

    I’ve T2 and 6230 nokia
internet GPRS works But SMS and dialer don’t work with 6210 config. Could you help me ?

  2. Mikael Hallendal on November 9th, 2004

I don’t know about the T2, I’ve only tested on T5. What I would do is to try out different profiles and see if you can get any of them to work.

Also, have you checked if there are updates to the profiles available?

Rumor has it that the BtCommVDrv.prc on Tungsten T5 has changed and that installing it on Tungsten T2, Tungsten T3 will cure the Nokia connection problems.

Rumor has it that there will be a new Phonelink update soon.

To make my Palm Tungsten T3 connect to Orange UK GPRS via a Nokia 6320 (with its software now updated at a Nokia service centre), I have found that the 6310 settings in Phone Link work, but using 6310i settings appears to cause the phone to connect OK but then crash & reboot after just a few seconds of downloading data. Worth a try for anyone struggling to get connected!

I’ve been sending sooooo many e-mails to Palm about an update it’s not even funny, I have the same problems but I use a Tungsten T and a Sony-E K700i… I can connect somewhat using the T-610 as “default phone”… But palm said they didn’t have any plans on a new update soon, there were just toooo many new phones they said :(

I have had a T3 for 6 months but have not been able to find any driver to connect via IR to my Nokia 3200. Do you perhaps have any experience of this ?

    Thanks,
    David

  7. Mikael Hallendal on November 27th, 2004

David, sorry to say that I don’t. Neither the Nokia 3200 or the T3.

  8. Phil on December 1st, 2004

    Hi Mikael,
it really seems that older versions of the bluetooth stack won’t allow Nokia 6230 to connect to Palm Tungsten up to T3 included.
Would you be so kind and extract the T5 BtCommVDrv.prc from your device for us please ?
It could help us to test SMS sending with our T3 for example :-) And may be, help us to find a solution for this issue.
If you’re not familiar with this, you can try to use the freeware file explorer “filez” to do so.
Thanks in advance from all the Palm / 6230 community :-)))

Palm just released the driver for Nokia 6230 on November 29, 2004. It’s on Phone Link Update. However for SMS functionality is only for Tungsten T5. Still does not work for my Zire72

    Hi Mikael -

I got your dialer workaround to communicate further with the 6230 to the T3 than anything else I’ve tried, but it failed to pair with various combinations of passcodes I tried. It asked for the usual pairing code, plus a 16 digit one and I basically tried various sequences. Any thoughts on the passcode part (e.g., did you have to do that for the T5 and were there any tricks to the codes), or is this the doom that everyone else refers too?

    Thanks!

  11. Karl on December 8th, 2004

When you are asked for a 16 digit code enter any 16 digits and then the same 16 digits on the other device to pair them. I like most can get the 6230 connected to my zire 72 via bluetooth for gprs but not for sms / dialler. Can’t find the driver update mentioned above. Wakey, wakey Palm…….

  12. TJ on December 13th, 2004

    Hi
I seem to be having the same problem with the T3 and N6230. Downloaded all the various updates/software etc but still only get as far as the phone accepting the connection from the T3, then “Remote SIM mode” appears on the phone, the connection level indicators drop all bars (nothing), and the connection then drops and the send (sms, dial a number etc) fails. I can send contacts etc between phone and T3, but do nothing that requires dialing/connection to outside world! I even tried the 6310 trick and that did exactly the same.

Tested the T3 with a SE Z600 and it works just fine!

Hopefully someone (Nokia/Palm perhaps!!!) will come up with an answer for this ……….

  13. Harvey S. Cohen on December 15th, 2004

How do you send contacts from T3 to 6230? That would be convenient.

  14. Mikael Hallendal on December 16th, 2004

I’ve only sent contacts the other way around but it should probably work to send from palm as well.

  15. Foo on December 17th, 2004

    To albedo.
You have bad sw in 6230.You need last SW.4.44.
Try *#0000# on your phone. If you have sw version 3.15 or 4.28 contact your Nokia service.

  16. Michael Stockwell on December 28th, 2004

I have the same SMS issue with my 6230 and the Zire 72. Apparently Palm only supports the gprs internet connection and not SMS. Has anyone come across a workaround? This has been a dissapointing and expensive experience to say the least.

I found this on the Palm website after digging around for answers.
Due to certain limitations in the phone’s features, palmOne cannot provide some functionality when paired with certain phones, as described below:

    Nokia 6230 and 6820:
When paired with Nokia 6230 and Nokia 6820, SMS and Dialing from the handheld are not supported on the following devices: Palm Bluetooth Card, Tungsten T, Tungsten T2, Tungsten T3 or Zire 72.
NOTE: SMS and Dialing are supported on Tungsten T5.

Hi this was my first hit on Google for “palm 5 driver nokia 6230″, so others might benefit from this too…

I have a Palm Tungsten T5 connected to a Nokia 6230 via Bluetooth and my network in the UK is Orange.

However this modem workaround should be almost generic - provided you can get your GPRS APN from your network and your phone was built to the GSM standard so that the AT+CGDCONT string works.

This was the recommended recipe from the excellent (if you can escalate your call sufficiently) Orange UK data support team. I accept it isn’t the best solution given you’re not assigning a correct phone to the palm, but it does allow for a reliable and faster connection over GPRS in my opinion.

    1) Prefs > Connection > New
    2) Name “Nokia 6230 via script”
    3) Connect to: Phone
    4) Via: Bluetooth
    5) Device: Tap and select
    6) Connect to: PC
    7) OK 8) Done
    9) Network
    10) New
    11) Service
    12) Service: Orange Script
    13) Username: a
    14) Password: a
    15) Connection: Nokia 6230 via script
    16) Details…
    17) Connection Type: PPP
    18) Idle Timeout: 1 minute
    19) Query DNS: checked
    20) IP Address: checked Automatic
    21) Script…
    Send: at+cgdcont=1,”IP”,”orangeinternet”
    Send CR:
    Delay: 3
    Send atd*99#
    Send CR
    Delay: 3
    Wait For: CONNECT
    End:
    22) OK
    23) OK
    24) Test with Connect.

If you’re not with Orange, you will have to change orangeinternet in the script to your networks GPRS Access Point Name (APN).

  18. Atthead on February 5th, 2005

Thank you, james, your script really pulled me out of darkness…I did not understand how to do what so far, maybe I am dumb… this solved how to dial from my PC too :) thanQ

I am trying to get online with my t3 using my nokia 6820. Currently there is no driver to accomodate it, so I am stuck only being able to send contacts with bluetooth, but not get online.
I have tried your script method (using a different phone model, because the 6820 is not an option) and it seems to be trying to connect, but it tells me that it cannot find the modem.
Any suggestions to make it all work?
    Thanks, Alan

  20. Kevin on February 14th, 2005

    Hi Atthead,
Can I confirm that you now have a 6230 woking with a T3 SMS, Dilling, Web the whole kit working thanks to James Script?

  21. Chris on February 18th, 2005

I’m suffering the Palm T3 Nokia 6230 problem.
Any idea where I can get the T5’s BtCommVDrv.prc from?

  22. Steved on March 4th, 2005

Palm T3 Nokia 6230 Dialer or SMS problem seems to be widespread.
I don’t get it, the reference on the palm website say SMS won’t work with the 6230 because of a phone problem, but it works with the T5 . Duh.. then there can’t be anything wrong with the phone then can there.
I used to have a 6310i and the T3 worked fine on that. The palm support people just don’t really care enough about us to write a decent driver. Palm want to give us a reason for upgrading our T3’s. Which generally work great except for the screws that fall out from time to time.

  23. Elliot on March 23rd, 2005

In an exhausted effort to use the palm SMS application on my Tungsten T through my 6230 I found a few documents to aid in the installation of the phone link program. I’ll make a note early that I am still unable to use the SMS application as my phone goes into “Remote SIM mode” and sometimes glitches out and seems to do a hard reset. I’ll post this procedure anyways as you may be able to find the T5’s BtCommVDrv.prc here.

Taken from the .pdf file lsited below:

“Download the correct files for your phone. In the United States, go to
http://www.palm.com/support/bluetooth. In other countries, go to
http://www.palm.com/xx/mobile/drivers and replace xx with your country code.”

From those links I was able to download a .zip file containing many of the needed Palm files to use the Phone link app w/ my tungsten T. I am now able to use GPRS and connect to the web via bluetooth but I am still unable to use SMS. Perhaps someone could find the BtCommVDrv.prc file w/ the provided links.

I also used the US region “pairing guide.pdf” listed here:

    http://www.palmone.com/us/support/handbooks/tungstent/bluetooth_pairing.pdf

I hope this information helps. I love my 6230 and my Tungsten T. Can’t we all just get along?

    Thanks in advance,

    elliot

  24. Doody Boy on March 28th, 2005

I have read all this and Palm’s site with interest. I am certainly not a newbie to all this Palm/Phone/Bluetooth stuff but I must admit that the T3 to Nokia 6230 connectivity has me beat! So my new 6230 is consigned to the bin and I’ve learned a very expensive lesson. Stick to Sony Ericsson. Never had a problem with any phone - even with “old” drivers. They’ve certainly got this Bluetooth stuff sorted!!

However, I’m actually with SteveD, there is no problem with the phone itself, it’s just that Palm are lazy and want you to buy a new device. However, in my experience upgrading brings its own problems and anyway there’s still nothing out there to beat the T3 in terms of flexibility and form factor.

So, let’s all stick with the old stuff that works. Maybe a loss of revenue will make Palm and Nokia think about compatibility!

    There again maybe not!!

  25. Mikael Hallendal on March 28th, 2005

Yeah, I have to say that I’m really surprised that Nokia (biggest mobile manufacturer) and Palm (still biggest on PDA?) doesn’t have 100% flawless integration. They would both earn soo much on it…

  26. Tutasca on April 9th, 2005

All they both are doing (nokia and palm)is bullsh.. palm is dying, as you can see in palminfocenter, and nokia doesn´t like us to use a palm and a phone. So we sould do so, I mean, not use any palm or nokia either. But I like them both… :(

  27. Karl on April 10th, 2005

I struggled for ages (read months) and never managed to get SMS or dialler working from Zire 72 to Nokia 6230 via bluetooth. (GPRS web browsing was fine). The nokia always went into “remote sim mode”, also had a few problems with my non-nokia bluetooth headset. Tried 3 different Nokia models always the same problems.

I read somewhere that new generation Nokia phones have a “non-standard” implementation of the bluetooth “standard” and the only bluetooth accessories guaranteed to work with a Nokia are yep you guessed it Nokia accessories…..

Don’t know if it’s true but I’ve junked the Nokia and now use a Motorola V3 and guess what, Zire 72 and headset both work perfectly……

    Moral is don’t buy Nokia…..

Hope this may save someone lots of time….

  28. Ian on April 11th, 2005

The Tungsten T5 works with the Nokia 6230 so Palm do know how to communicate properly with the phone. Since the tech support people give the same stupid response to every query regarding this problem I am assuming they have no intention of releasing a proper driver for the T3.

The T3 is the last piece of PalmOne junk I’ll be wasting money on, although it wouldn’t surprise me if Nokia and the rest of the phone manufacturers were also up to no good. I do know that Nokia doesn’t listen to customers because they don’t have to; the software on their phones is often very buggy and they show no interest in fixing it.

Moral is don’t buy PalmOne products either.

    Greetings all,

As a formerly cheesed off Nokia6230 and T3 owner I’ll tell you how I got the dialler working (Haven’t tried anything else).

    1) Upgraded my 6230 firmware to 5.35

    2) Installed the Nokia6210.prc and PhoneLink.prc files and sync’d.

    3) Downloaded the phone_link_update_V2 from the US website.

    4) Followed Micke’s instructions on this website for the phone dialler/SMS bit (Nokia 6210 setting)

    5) Downloaded the BTCommVdrv_T5 from the link on this site (post by ppalmt3 on 7th May)

    6) BACKED UP MY T3!!!!!

    7) Followed instructions posted by ppalmt3 posted 8th May 2005 to copy BTCommVdrv to palm (note you end up with two copies of the file, one in ROM one not)
    8) Soft restart T3

9)Started phonelink application on T3 and followed instructions (using previously created 6210 profile)

    10) VOILA! Dialer Worked!!!

I hope everyone finds this solution works for them. I for one am sick and tired of palms crap support. This proves with a bit of teamwork we can overcome their selfish arrogance.
    Enjoy.

Greetings from Mexico! I own a T3 Palm and a Nokia 6230 and had the same issue. I applied the Phone Link Update recommended by Palm, downloaded the file provided by ppalmt3 to my T3 (BtCommVdrv_T5.prc)
directly to the main memory, applied a soft reset and now SMS & dialer apps are working fine! (as well as GPRS connection) Thanks again!

  60. KC Boyce on June 16th, 2005

Despite all my efforts, I cannot make an internet connection between my T3/6230. My carrier is Cingular (US). Trying to connect with GPRS results in a message on the phone saying “Subscribe to GPRS Service”, even though Cingular is on a “pay as you go” plan with GPRS.

Trying to connect via dial-up networking results in a “no carrier” message on my T3.

Any clues where to go next?

Thanks to Larry for helping me get my dialer working!

  61. Al. Lange on June 23rd, 2005

There is a problem with the T3’s Bluetooth stack (actually with all devices <= PalmOS 5.2) and the Nokia 6230. The Palm will always connect to the “SIM access profile” and not the “Serial rfcomm profile”. The phone will disconnect from the network and no SMS function is possible. Neither Nokia nor PalmOne will fix this.

You can fix this by copying the Bluetooth serial driver (BtCommVdrc*.prc) from the T5 onto the T3. I know it works, I make the phone drivers.

I know that it works with the Tungsten T3. But for legal reasons I cannot send you the files. Maybe somebody else will.

I don’t know if this patch can be done with the old Tungsten T. It has PalmOS 5.0, maybe it has different problems.

Note that you should turn Bluetooth off on the receiving device, as well as BT-Toggle or anything like that. You should copy the files from SD card into RAM, do not install them with Hotsync. Reset after install.

Do NOT forget to install the resource file for your language. You must install at least two files on your T3.

  62. Eddie on June 24th, 2005

    Thanks Al.Lange.

I’m now able to use Palm SMS program to send English & Chinese SMS. It cleared up all the mess with Nokia phone which I considered to trade it with a Sony Ericsson.

    Cheers!!!!!

I’d like to thank everybody who posted here and specially to ppalmt3 for sharing the prc file, Larry for the step-by-step instructions, Al.Lange for explaining the issue in detail and Mikael, of course, who made it all possible.

Now I finally have the T3 working fine with the 6820a.

    THANK YOU, VERY MUCH!
