New maintainer for the Ruby GTK+ bindings.
It’s not only in the upstream GTK+ project that there has been a lot of happenings lately. The Ruby GTK+ bindings team got a new maintainer after the old maintainer Masao Mutoh decided to step down and turn the reins over to .
Kouhei seems set on doing a new, much anticipated release of the bindings as soon as possible. The last release was done over a year ago (2006-12-29) and a lot of improvements have been done after.
I’d like to extend my thanks to both Masao and Kouhei for their efforts and willingness to take care of maintaining the bindings for this excellent language.
I also raised the question about moving the project over to GNOMEs infrastructure to get closer to upstream development and make it easier for people to participate. The suggestion seems to have been well received and many have said that they would love that. I’m pretty sure it would put some more light on the project and help the continued development positively.
That’s good news. After programming with Ruby on the side for a while I’ve become quite fond of it, and it would be great if the Ruby bindings would get close to the Python ones in terms of completeness. Although I have not done any ruby-gnome coding specifically, and do not know much about the current status - the information on the website suggests that it’s a bit out of shape atm.
Great news! Waiting for new shiny ruby-gnome2 release with all new cool stuff!
Yeah, I love ruby gnome, the same concept applied to programming language and desktop environment.
Ahh, great! Ruby feels so much like Perl done right; having high-quality GTK and Gnome bindings for it is perfect.
Ruby + GTK is sweet! I was moaning about lack of a decent dosbox front end for the Nokia Internet Tablets, and a friend whipped one up in rubygtk in like 3 hours!

Personally I think it would be better if the Gnome guys officially “endorse” Ruby-gtk.
The bindings are decent, and I think the ruby-wiki is of a very good quality (I dare challenge everyone that disagrees on this last part to show me any other ruby-toolkit with such high quality docus available _specific_ towards ruby gtk/gnome)
Integration in a loose/light manner with gtk/gnome could help us in a few ways possibly:
- Maybe a future one-place where all gnome/gtk specific docu is accessed or accessible from one website (at least as jumping point), including all the current docu stuff on the website
- Have people _inside_ Gnome that also know and use ruby (I have no ill feeling towards python, but I can not stand perl and I want to lower the amount of people knowing AND using perl compared to ruby. In my experience there are some people who stick to perl and never learn something different… with python people this is not so drastic, i think it might be a few old C hackers that are too lazy to learn something new… but i am speculating here)
PS: I suspected this with masao as he married not long ago, and japanese are so eager to work… guess he is planning kids in the near term future!
