In search for a good online photo storage

Published by Mikael Hallendal on August 21, 2005 10:13 pm under Photography

After I switched to Original I’ve realised I’m a lot slower on publishing any photos. While Original is one of the nicest-looking galleries it’s a pain to update. Especially if you like me use iPhoto for managing your photos.

I used to have a couple of scripts on my Linux machines for adding photos but as with all of those hackish solutions you tend to forget how they work, they get broken without reason or lost when upgrading or switching machines.

What I really want is something that I can integrate well with iPhoto to just click and upload. I got pointed to a very nice iPhoto plugin for Flickr but unfortunately the look of your created galleries looks like a reference implementation to try something out. However it’s definitely seems to be a great service for photo blogging, but I want to be able to put up nice albumes too.

I also tried out the .mac account provided by Apple, and it’s really simple to use, however you create static pages instead of albumes that you can update by adding just another picture.

There seems to be some plugin for Gallery as well but last time I used Gallery it was very hard to make it look good or to integrate it somewhat in your site. While integration with the rest of the site isn’t a top priority it would be nice if it was easy.

If anyone know of a good service (for me and my wife), please let me know.

I’d recommend smugmug.com. They’ve got an iPhoto uploader, but doesn’t seem to be a plugin though. I’ve been using them for a couple years and like them a lot.

    Hi,

you should try the latest version of gallery (Gallery2 or G@). It’s been rewritten from scratch, with embeddability and extensibility in mind. It has a nice theme system so you can either tweak one of the default themes, or even write your own theme that 100% matches your needs.

    Good luck !

On a related note, f-spot happily exports albums for Original. Just a matter of rsync/ftp it to your server.

I use Gallery, and while my Gallery theme does not match my WordPress theme that is only because I just switched my WordPress theme and haven’t bothered to change Gallery’s yet.

There is lots of info on how to make Gallery use WordPress themes and you could probably apply this to your website.

I like Gallery and I love the iPhoto-Gallery Plugin.

Stephen Gerstacker sent me this applescript which should make is easy to export photo from iPhoto to Original. I didn;t have time to test it, but once I do and it works, I’ll release it along with 0.11.

But F-Spot should give you painless export to Original as it can hangle even sftp:// upload thanks to gnome-vfs.

This is Stephen… I came over to tell you about my script, but Jakub beat me to it. I just took a vacation and I’m about to fix up the script a bit and send another version to Jakub. If you would like, I could shoot you a copy as well.

My wife and I use this application: Galerie. It works well with iPhoto, just drag and drop photos. You can obtain Galerie free of charge from this website:

I must second the other comments saying to take another look at Gallery. Gallery 2.0’s vision statement ( http://gallery.menalto.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=phpWiki&file=index&pagename=Project%20Vision ) claims that it is intended to solve all the problems you mentioned with integration difficulties. Gallery 2.0 Release Candidate 1 was just released two weeks ago, so the final release is likely imminent.

The forum thread at http://gallery.menalto.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=21047&sid=2a7b858d0137b242a8bce7293e7c81ef provides a list of sites demonstrating Gallery 2 in action, some with very nice integration.

I reccomend apache::gallery. It can be figured to act like ~/public_html/. So for instance, I have it setup that all users have to do is drop images into ~/gallery/ and it automatically gets picked up by the galleries. virtual domain of apache.

    http://apachegallery.dk/

it’s simple, but works well at what it does.

I vote for the Wordpress + Gallery 2 option. I’m not a fan of MT (perl, ack) so I don’t know about any integrations it has with G/G2. I’m a long time user of Gallery and have messed with G2 and can say it is a ton better.

I use embedded Gallery 2 (preview that I still need to update) and I can say it works quite well. The code needed to integrate it with my homegrown CMS is just 74 lines of php. I haven’t done themeing yet but seeing as Gallery uses Smarty that should not be very difficult.

In other words, another happy Gallery 2 user.

I tried using http://my-expressions.com for a while and found it to be good, but it’s pricey. The themes are good, customizable, it’s quite easy to use but lacks any automation whatsoever.

    Photostack is nice and no-frills-simple.

Use flickr and use on of the many API based frontends to it that can show sets, I wrote one using php and templates, dead simple and you can get the look and feel you like but storage and management UI by flickr - they’re great at that.
