Github and Loudmouth

Stumbled over a new service called Github a while back when listening to a Ruby on Rails Podcast. Having used Git for the past year or so I was excited to see this service as it seemed to be a great solution to one of my biggest problems with decentralized version control systems, overview of what cool things people around me hack on.

In short Github is a Git hosting service with a web front end for tracking, forking and posting pull requests. It gives you a great overview of who forked your repository and what they are hacking on.

With the Loudmouth 1.3 branch development spread out on three different developers where I often forget to check out what the others are up to I figured this might be a good solution and requested a beta account there.

So far I’m really happy with it and it is also a great fun way of tracking other repositories I’m not working on, something like this for GNOME would be awesome.

To keep track of my Loudmouth hacking, just subscribe to the RSS feed or check out my Loudmouth repository.

If you want to help out hacking on Loudmouth, just drop me an email for an invite.

After that it’s just fork and hack away!

SyncTV, built on GTK+

Really excited to be able to share some information about a project that we have been working on lately!

SyncTV

Pioneer recently released their new service SyncTV in a private beta. What makes it very interesting is that it’s built using GTK+ and GStreamer. SyncTV is an application and service to watch movies and TV-series over the internet.

SyncTV provide this service on Linux, Mac OS X and Windows, all through the cross platform capabilities of GTK+. SyncTV also shows that you can make really slick applications with GTK+ that look identical no matter which platform you run it on.

At Imendio we have worked on the project since spring 2007, mainly by improving the GTK+ Mac OS X port, but also packaging the application into an easily installable application bundle.

The project also included making Webkit/GTK+ run smoothly on Mac OS X which involved replacing the font backend to make it use Pango. Sven blogged briefly about this last year.

The observant follower of All Things Imendio (TM) would also realize that part of this project was to create hooks for GTK+ to integrate with the Mac OS X menubar which Mitch blogged about.

Moved to Wordpress

After lingering in my todo list for quite some time I finally got around to the task of migrating my blog from Movable Type to Wordpress. I considered using Drupal since we are using it for other sites but after some consideration and looking at Wordpress I decided it was a better solution for my personal blog which will most likely not have a lot of non-blog content.

The process was pretty straight forward, I followed these instructions and I had it up and running in less than an hour. After some tweaking trying to get a working solution for URL redirects, I ended up just forwarding the top 10 incoming links. Hopefully I’ll get around to sort out the rest of the links soon.

So far I’m very impressed with Wordpress though I would like to see a way to install plugins and themes from inside the admin UI. The best would be to get a list of plugins to browse and just click install, second best would be the possibility of pointing to a local .zip and upload/unpack it from the admin UI without having to transfer it manually to the server and then log in and unpack it in the right place.
